I was stationed at the base back in the early 70's and prior to the A10's warhogs. I moved back here in Conway just about two years ago. Major changes to the area. Not a summer community anymore. I go on the base for the VA clinic. I really wish the base was here. Damn Congress! What do they know?! We are very happy here.
I previously posted about watching the A-10s, from the Myrtle Beach Grand Prix parking lot, and taking some pictures. Well, I was down in the basement yesterday, looking for some car parts, and remembered this discussion. I looked through the "family picture box", and found the Myrtle Beach pictures I was thinking of, scanned them, and here they are.

Did you know Myrtle Beach International Airport was once an Air Force Base? It was in operation when Mom, Dad, and I vacationed there in 1985. A-10s flew out of there.
The airport was always the airport and never the AFB.
The AFB and the airport shared the runway/tarmac.
When I was a kid, you would have to walk out to the planes on the runway.
My bf was stationed there late 60s. If you get a chance, once all this coronavirus business is over, take the Trolley Tour if it comes back. It’s once a month or so & you get lunch at Tupelo Honey afterwards. It was very interesting, especially to bf to see all the changes from 50 years ago.
Before I met her, my wife would tell stories of her and her girlfriends from Columbia going to MB and flirting with the Air Force guys stationed there and Citadel Cadets as the Citadel had a Beach House there.. They also flirted with soldiers from Ft. Jackson and Shaw. Such little hussies............LOL

Could you clarify that, a little bit? Are you saying that the commercial airport and the Air Force base had a common runway? If so, how did security for the military installation insure that no unauthorized people wandered in through the public access area of the "airport", and made it over to the AFB?
