Salt water & air will do that. Keeping things properly maintained will slow the process, but rarely stop it.

Saltwater air and the heat corrodes everything metal, plastic and rubber. If you live close to the beach, keeping your windows closed and the a/c on helps with keeping the inside from deteriorating. Keep your car garaged.
