Considering several areas in SC/Nc but here is my biggest concern. Have NEVER lived on my own before...I know remarkable!! Just want to be in a safer area where neighbors keep an eye on each other or it is safe to be during the day and not need bars on my windows. Obviously the standard safety issues of being in an area at night are understood and I'm not naive having lived near a large city but need to be realistic being on my own. What areas could I consider that fit the below? Thanks!
1. I'll need to buy in the range of 60k-100k. I've done lots of remodeling so a fixer-upper is fine if on the lower end. Only need a 2/1 but would be open to larger.
2. Prefer a home but need enough room to build a 6'x8' soaking pool in yard or on a porch for health reasons. Looking at properties with city or county(?) water rather than well because of this.
3. Divorcing and hope to take about 6 months off. Since I'll be paying cash for the house and will have buffer, employment isn't a huge concern to me. I'm a fiber/installation artist and hope to teach somewhere but only have a bachelors. Also have interior design experience. Worked in a variety of other fields too and just need to cover non mortgage expenses.
4. no kids with me
5. prefer suburban or rural but want to be no more than 30 minutes from beach. Doesn't have to be a big beach but I'm moving to the coast to be be able to walk on a beach again having lived in a winter freeze for last 20+ years.
6. Demographics as long as things are safe are not a big concern either. I'm in my 50's but relate to all ages/ethnicities.

There seem to be plenty of homes in Conway in this price range. They are typical brick ranches built in the 60's which could use cosmetic updates, but also newer houses further out of town. The example at 16xx McDermott Street has city water and sewer, and is priced at $85,500. I checked Spotcrime.com and there is nothing recent in the area. There were a couple of assults and thefts in the downtown part of Conway.
KavH: looking around the area pretty widely but don't want to be north of Conway. Would be o.k. with any city east, west, or south as long as the above criteria was met. What areas are you familiar with that would still have a community or city water system? What is downtown Conway like? Don't need to be close to the base as not military. In fact prefer further. Would be very open to being less than 30 min away from beaches other than Myrtle...don't need a big beach. Just walking and a little soaking, not a big swimmer. Are there any fitness centers or YMCAs that have a warm therapy pool (usually a smaller separate pool)in the greater area? Would love to be able to get a good cup of coffee in the area I settle too. Shopped used for everything so any resale shop information would be nice too. Any info would be appreciated. Sorry for the list....but you asked! Thanks
No. Planning a trip soon. Checking on 2-3 other areas near the coast to see what will be the best fit and looking for input from people in the know, i.e. like you.
That was going to be my suggestion - you can get general info from us here but you really have to come visit. The Conway area covers a good bit of ground with every variation in price and size. There are lots of new neighborhoods too. You asked about a Y - there is a new rec center in Conway with lots to offer. The further "out" you go the cheaper it is as a general rule.
Come visit and if something peaks your interest feel free to ask some more!
Sorry for the delay, company in town. I do large scale work that tends to be done in a series and interactive in some way. I like the audience to touch my work so it tends to be tactile which for me lends toward using fiber techniques (such as papermaking or weaving) and/or objects that are manipulated in some way. My first series consisted of about 10 pieces that included a lot of medical equipment like an exam table, x-ray viewer and a constructed hospital cubicle. Installation work is typically placed, performed, or created in a particular space created on a site rather than just hanging on display like a painting is. If you're interested in seeing the series you can still find my old website at Karen Jayne (not www.). It's not the same as experiencing it with the sound and textures but it will give you an idea.
