My in laws are up in the Wilmington area. They moved there because there never is that huge tourist influx or even a big spring break group. There is still plenty to do, although not as much as Myrtle, but more for the older crowd. I love it there.
Like I have stated before,It's all in what kind of lifestyle you want. If you want to live an isolated, sheltered life and get in your car and drive every time you go somewhere, then Wilmington would be for you. If you want to live where you can ride your bike or walk to things and have more dining, shopping and entertainment choices, then Myrtle Beach is better. Yes,it gets busier during the spring and summer, but that's because it is a more desirable place for vacationers for many reasons. The reason there is no huge tourist influx in Wilmington is because there's not that much here that tourists want to see or visit. If they do want to do the tourist thing here, you can do it all in a day......two at the most.
Have been looking for a year for retirement property between Wilmington and Myrtle. Found Myrtle to be very touristy - very crowded; lots of tacky stores - Wilmington and suburbs seem to be more family oriented.....just our view.....

Wilmington has some sketchy areas as well..... especially downtown.

You can say that again! There's some VERY old and run down areas and some VERY shady, questionable and undesirable areas. Every town has them and like everywhere else, you just have to learn where the undesirable areas are and stay out of them. It's the same for Myrtle Beach......there's beautiful and there's not so nice. You don't have to live in or go to those undesirable areas. However, the good far outweighs the bad as far as I can tell or see. It was the same way when we lived in Orlando,Florida(The City Beautiful)for fifteen years. There were areas you just didn't go or live and there were beautiful and desirable areas.
The OMB designation of Brunswick county as part of Myrtle Beach metro area is seriously flawed and should be changed immediately. A metro area is made counties which have economic ties to the home county based on shopping and commuting patterns. The OMB has decided that commuting patterns are not that important anymore as a measure of economic ties that a county has to its nearby major city where the high commutting exists. As a result of removing the commuting element in the definition, now just shopping is the major determinant. Since Brunswick county residents have more shopping available in there own county now,the frequency of shopping in Wilmington may be down, but those in the most populous northern half of the county still shop in Wilmington at least once a week. But due to the growth also in the southern part of the county with more retirees also living there a few more may be shopping in Myrtle Beach now. But that is only part of the equation, Many more Brunswick residents work in Wilmington than Myrtle Beach so that does offset the slight advantage Myrtle Beach may have in shopping. But by reducing the commuting factor the OMB has made Brunswick now part of Myrtle Beach metro, so Wilmington has a loss of 100,000 people in its metro, which lowers Wilmington's rank to below the Top 200 metros. As a result many buisnesses will now pass on Wilmington as being too small of area for them to consider doing business in. This is not fair to Wilmington and Im sure they are going to make this point to all prospects who are looking at the area. May they have much success. Ted French
