I am interested in moving to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I have been doing some research. I have found that the crime rate is 200% in comparison to the national average. This of course makes me a little reluctant in my consideration to move there. Does anyone have any information as to why this number is so high??

I'd attribute it to the fact that we have a tourist base of 14 MILLION people per year and a year round population of about 50,000, in the Myrtle Beach area. I think Horry County has about 225,000 total.

The numbers are set to be skewed from the start, just as they are in Vegas, Orlando, and other MAJOR tourist areas/destinations. Of course, as with any tourist destination, the transient population doesn't help the crime stats..

rrufast is correct, the stats are compiled on a per capita basis and the amount of crimes in comparison to the year round residents don't add up very well. The majority of the crimes occur in the tourist areas and are mostly petty thefts. There are a few areas where drugs are more prevelant too but if look into the solid residential areas, particularly in the outskirts of MB you will see that crime is pretty low, the schools are pretty good and the people are pretty nice & friendly. Check it out!

EXACTLY!

There are murders but normally they are due to some idiot not being able to control themselves when out at a nightclub. Or you have the domestic violence murder once in a blue moon. Then you have a random murder and I think I've heard of maybe three in our area this year???
