Events like the Cal Ripken Experience are an example of sport tourism which is the travel that involves either viewing or participating in a sporting event. As for the Pelicans, Warriors (the ABA is hardly major league), and the Roller Derby events they may be fun family things to attend but they are not what big businesses look for when scouting potential locations or what attracts highly educated and trained professionals or tech start-ups. They are not what creates high wage jobs. Name a major company headquartered in Myrtle Beach or a Myrtle Beach based rising tech start-up? Where does Myrtle Beach rank when it comes to research and development?

When I speak of Myrtle Beach diversifying its economy I'm not talking about sporting amenities and events but actually focusing on attracting and/or expanding industries outside of tourism and retail. I don't think you quite grasp what a diversified economy is. Not to be a douchebag, but I feel like your counter is going to involve telling me about laser tag events or something.

Oh, well, you're too highbrow for me. Besides, I'm heavily invested in this "tourist trap", as you call it.

You're barking up the wrong tree, here. This is the "redneck riviera". We would make poor neighbors for the "highly educated, trained professional", like you.

Redneck Riviera, meet my friend Gentrification.

But seriously, I don't understand some people's content with the status quo. Horry County has the country's lowest wages among big counties. That is largely contributed to the low-paying nature of the tourism-related jobs that dominate the area. What logical explanation can you offer against diversifying into other types of industries that pay well such as aviation, manufacturing, science and technology jobs?

uh, maybe even more traffic, noise pollution, excess waste, illegal dumping, increased crime, delinquency, and all of the ills that come when a city grows (in spite of the "benefits" of the type of industries you cite).

Admittedly, I do not live in the area (yet), and do not share your frustration. However, I do believe that growth brings both positive and negative consequences.

Don't forget - even though most in this country "hate" government, you also have to have a forward-thinking, competent set of officials as well as citizens who are willing to pay for the necessities of growth. Is this available in Horry County?

Everything in life has its pros and cons. That's a given. However, I believe the pros far outweigh the cons. And there are a number of small to mid-size cities experiencing growth without increasing crime and delinquency. Growth in a better paid and educated population typically leads to decreases in crime.

The county and Myrtle Beach have economic development corps and institutions, but the politics involved are a whole other thread.

Does anyone know if the MB International Technology & Aerospace Park has any contracts for tenants yet? If so, does anyone know which company's are planning on moving in?

As far as I know there are not any contracts for tenants or at least none made public yet. I read a few months ago there was a request for funding to build buildings in hopes of attracting tenants.

Game changer has to be several fold deep.

First off the hotels need to be better regulated and up to code. Many hotels seem to be going to heck and the owners are not taking care of them.

The area needs to go back to the AMERICANS FAMILY VACATION DESTINATION.

Just a quick list.

1. Get rid of the strip clubs completely out of the entire county. Anyone remember the scam vending gambling machines many years ago that left families without money to spend for the week while on vacation?

2. Attract more manufacturing jobs to the outer areas of the city.

3. The local politics seem to be a large issue and those who live in this area need to vote them out of office or nothing will get done.

4. Attract even more larger businesses to the area that are not there yet. Whatever is popular in other places MB needs to get them into this area.

5. Finish the highway going in and out of MB as planned years ago. I think it is Rt 70??

6. I like the Market Commons idea. Clean places up and make them useful like they did here.

Just a few quick thoughts.
