can someone tell me where the closest area to Myrtle Beach is that is in or near the mountains? We would like to rent a cabin at various times and are new to MB area, still unclear as to what we are near. Thanks!
South and North Carolina have extensive tourism websites. Search everything you can think of on Google. Look at roadmaps. Go to Barnes and Noble and see all the Guides. Check with the autoclub if you are a member.
trust me I have been googling for hours. I still can't find just the right place. Thanks though.

I'm partial to the Waynesville-Robinsville area myself, but I also enjoying riding my bike, and this area is WELL KNOWN to riders up and down the East coast...
The roads and scenery are fantastic!
Fontana Dam, Tapaco Bridge, Maggie Valley, The Cherahola Skyway, The Blue Ridge Parkway and 'The Tail of the Dragon, better known as Deal's Gap, are all right there for you to enjoy...
great ideas-thanks!! I have been looking at some areas in Blue Ridge. Hard to determine the length of the drive. I'll have 3 pets with me so I don't want to make them ride too long. Do you know how long the drive is to the Blue Ridge Ga. area?

I went to mapquest and did a search from Myrtle Beach to Blue Ridge, Ga. It was more than 7 hours.
You may want to try Lake Lure, NC. if you will be by yourself with three dogs.
Some of the prettiest mountain areas around are on and near Lake Jocassee, SC. It's still pretty unspoiled by development up there, and there are some fairly large mountain ranges and majestic water falls west of the lake.
I live in Myrtle Beach and my grandmother lives in the upstate - right in the foot hills of the mountains. She lives in Landrum, SC (right on the SC/NC line) and it takes me 4.5 hours to drive to my grandmothers from here. It's a very easy drive - from here to Columbia SC - then take I-26 right into the mountains.
The following areas are within about an hours drive of that: Saluda, Tryon, Fletcher, Hendersonville, Flat Rock, Lake Lure, Asheville, Brevard.
I too have searched for cabins up in those areas. It's hard sometimes to find pet friendly rentals (I have 2 dogs). Try ..VRBO® is Vacation Rentals by Owner® Vacation Homes Rentals by Owner (http://www.vrbo.com - broken link). This is a really neat website for vacation rentals by owners ... there are TONS of cabins in the western part of NC and there is a little pet paw icon to identify pet friendly rentals. Be prepared for special rules & deposits though... you may have to email the owner to find out specifics.
Mapquest just Landrum, SC and then zoom out on the map just a bit. It will show you a variety of towns in that area that you can look for rentals in. At the bottom of that page you can then do direction to another time if you want an idea of the additional distance.
Maggie Valley is beautiful and about 5 hours from Myrtle Beach. Just over the mountain is Cherokee and you can make a donation to the tribe at Harrah's the tribes casino! Beyond Cherokee is Bryson City and white water rafting on the Nantahala. Maggie Valley has a website by it's name and dot org. Cabins for rent are listed on the site.
