I said there was only two I forgot about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Add that to the already mentioned Exorcist and The Shining.

Alien and Aliens, my favorite love to be startled suspenseful movies.

The Exorcist - terrifying. My friend took the back way home through the country and made strange noises and I started to cry (I am not a cryer!)
The Omen - having been through the Exorcist I was a little smarter - I just got up and left.
Basically anything with evil spirits, especially satanic evil spirits - I just don't do, I can't enjoy it.
So there may be others on the list - but I haven't seen them.

I freak at night when you have the windows open and a storm or the wind kicks up and all the curtains start to blow around and things start to feel creepy.......
Your friend probably did this to ease his or her own fear. To make light of a scary situation. My Granddpa saw it in the drive in when it came out and he was afraid to drive home alone....

Jaws, Exorcist Omen They made some good scary movies back then
One I liked was a low budget film called "Legend of Boggy Creek" it was shot documentary style, and since it was on an amateur budget, the filmmaker kept imagery of the monster (bigfoot) to a minimum, making the unknown even more fearful......FIlm made $Millions$ BTW

Did anybody see "2000 Maniacs"? It was kind of a cult classic. It was terribly made and gory beyond belief. I saw it on Halloween in about 1965 when I was in high school.

Carrie
The Amityville Horror
The Shining

Here are a couple of cheesy ones but I couldn't sleep by myself for a long time after watching...

Salem's Lot
Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park (I had nightmares about Gene Simmons for years and I'm pretty sure that they were the good guys)
Some of those Saturday afternoon scary movies put the fear in me also. I remember one were this crazy doctor cut a woman's head off and kept it alive in the basement. I can't find the name of the movie but that one was really disturbing

The original The Haunting 1962, directed by Robert Wise(Yes the same guy who did Sound of Music and West Side Story) This is the best ghost story ever put to film, only some elements of the British Film Dead of Night-1945 come close.
