In Greek mythology there lived a young princess, Arachne, who excelled in the art of weaving. So did Goddess Athena, the patron goddess of Greece, who was wise and learned and excelled in all things mortal including weaving. One day Arachne made a fatal mistake when she challenged Athena to a weaving contest and it turned out that Arachne's tapestry, which depicted pictures of the l3th signs of the lunar zodiac, was flawless and more beautiful. In a fit of anger, Athena a poor loser, tore the tapestry to shreds and destroyed the young woman's loom. She then changed Arachne into a spider whereupon Arachne, saddened and depressed, hung herself by a silver thread and ascended heavenward.
In symbolic language the tapestry represented the mortal union with the immortal self. The l3th constellation is Auriga, related to Arachne and its symbol is the cross within the circle such as found on ancient stones around the world representing inner brotherhoods. Pythagoran geometry is said to have aligned the stone circles to the Star Capella in the Auriga constellation.
Spider Woman appears again as the Minoan Greek Goddess, Ariade, or "one who spins," who gave a magical silken thread to Theseus which led him through a labyrinth to slay the Minotaur, his lower self.
Once again Spider Woman appears in the visions and paranormal experiences of the Navajo Indians, for it was the Spider People who taught them to weave, and through the Butterfly People they learned color and harmonious design.
Visions, silence, and the use of fine sensibilities continue to inspire Native Americans who produce some of the most beautiful arts and crafts in the world.
Silence is power on the Beauty Path. Moonduck
