Couple renting a 1BR/1BA apartment in Sunnyvale monthly for $1200. *We are conveniently located to our works, but we lived here more than 10 years. *We're looking to move out in one of 5 options: pay mortgage on a house or town home, rent another apartment month- to month, lease in Sunnyvale or Santa Clara for a year or more, move into a mobile home park, or relocate within 100 miles to an area nearby - as close as possible to what we're currently paying per month. *Which option is best?

Unfortunately you've provided too little information to give a recommendation.

First off your rent is ridiculously low for the Bay Area, especially Sunnyvale. You know that, right? You are close to work with low rent. So why move? If you moved to Monterey or anywhere else within 100 miles you would have to deal with significant traffic to work. That is unless you are considering looking for work closer to Monterey? What are you really trying to do different?

We're looking for a bigger and better place to live in line with the options originally stated, preferrably with 2 bedrooms. Commuting so long every day is not an option, as we don't work in auto shops where several workers around here actually do that. It would have to be a 10-mile radius from work, and given that we can actually work in the area. Right now our jobs are fine, here in the South Bay area.

You keep asking the question only you can answer. There is no "best" and how would we know anyway?

Wait, you want a 2-br. in the Bay Area for $1200? Did I get that right? You're not happy with the great rent you're paying now, you want more room for the same low rent?

That can't be right. Please explain more clearly what it is you want. You need to be someplace where you can easily commute to Sunnyvale, is that right? How much rent are you able to pay?

We're quite sure that we can get a lot more for what we are currently paying in rent then what we're currently getting. If it's not possible in the south bay area, then I'm sure it's possible in many other places, within a 100 mile radius. Given that our jobs are here however, it's best that we stay as close as possible here. Getting a "little nicer apartment" may be best, as rent here in ours has been going up every year for a while, and the apartment is quite old. That's what will happen should we stay here and not move out.
