Families who are refugees from Afghanistan are considering settling in Fergus Falls. What will they find there? Will they be welcomed? Will they find jobs? (They were university-trained horticulturalists in Afghanistan.) Will they find affordable housing (for families with two or three children)?

I am writing blogposts for my website smalltownimmigration.com. I read a recent article about Afghan refugees coming to the area, and I was interested in getting different perspectives on what it would be like for them in this town. I'm hoping to write a future blogpost that provides more information.

It is interesting though. I found this, perhaps you saw it also? I am sure they are very good workers, and am entitled to a better life from what they left behind. Fergus Falls is beautiful in the summer, and will get very cold in the winter at certain times. It is one of my top ten list of favorite towns in this state. I have not been there for years though, but that whole area is great. A very small town, slow and laid back. Plenty of open areas near, and lots of lakes. Good fishing area, lots of cabins also. Deer hunting and winter fun is plenty. Not sure about housing, but schools are probably average as anywhere. Small town, people over there are friendly, and willing to help someone out. https://www.mprnews.org/story/2021/1...-rural-america

You should “research” (Google) this further and you’ll see NW Minnesota has had people from the Middle East, east Africa, Mexico and Central America immigrating for quite some time. Some agricultural cities in the region are upwards of 16% Hispanic/Latino. I live in the MN-7 congressional district. No one cares where you’re from here - they care about your attitude and level of integrity. Some of my hometown’s most successful business owners are from China, Mexico, El Salvador as proof of this.

If its a small town, they can open a kebab restaurant, and bring some culinary diversity to the place. But I guess they first have to get serv-safe certified, and pass all requirements for opening food service.

In USA before the War on Terror there are some Afghan immigrants that opened a fried chicken franchise called Kennedy Fried Chicken in the NYC metro.

There is a Somali coffee shop in South Minneapolis called “Qaribuni.” It took me a while to figure that one out but now it brings me a smile every time I drive past it.
