Car keys are kind of spendy these days with the programming/chip. Wondering in the Twin Cities Metro if anyone here has a go-to place to have a car key made?

IF you do not need the chip, but just an key to open the door and start the engine, then lots of places you can cut your own key at the booth thing in many places. I have had keys made for my truck, (spare Keys) that do not have the chip in it, just door opens and starts the engine also. Just cost a few dollars. These are good for spare keys, placed under in a hidden spot on car, in case the regular keys get locked inside. Always keep a spare key tucked under the vehicle.

An 'open the door' key won't start my 2019 RAM. For what it's worth...

I think I've heard Kat's Keys, downtown st. Paul is cheap, right there on 7th by CHS field I think it is. They quoted me at $70 for a key to one of my old cars, though I'm not sure if they get it legit right. Looking for other suggestions if any have them.

Think I'm going to answer my own question here - maybe this will help someone else out here.

My cousin and I went into Menards the other week and saw that they have a key-making machine in there.

I checked for my make and model and they gave me option of "$79.99...I declined, and it gave me a new option of $50.00, so I said yes and rolled the dice on it actually working.

Well you stick your key in their machine, fill out your details and they send you a copy.

Just got my copy today and I was still skeptical it would work but lo and behold, I went out there and the key WORKS.

So, if anyone here needs a cheap(er) key made, that might be the best option. Make sure you decline the machine's first offer though like I did, and see if it gives you a lower price.

According to the machine, what’s the difference between the $79 and $50 keys?

I am not sure. Seemed weird that the first option was so much higher, and thatthe kiosk gave you the chance to decline the offer and then went like $30 lower.

But the key worked. $53 (after tax) sent to my home in a few days, versus like $250 from the dealer, and I am very happy.

Just looked into this as I need a duplicate key. My Rav4 only came with one when bought. The kiosk in Menards is called Key Me.

Thanks for the tip.

Did you get a quote from a locksmith by any chance? That kiosk in Menard seems to be the cheapest option. One locksmith (the dealer) quoted me at like $250 for a key.

That KeyMe. kiosk was $50 to have my key made, and it worked.
