We are exploring a possible relocation from Denver to Brainerd, MN for work in the healthcare field. We know winters are challenging but we are looking for lakes , nice outdoors and cheaper cost of life.Is it a more calm place for retirement long term? distance to twin cities? Will appreciate feedback and recommendations. Thanks

You can google distance from Brainerd to the Twin Cities. The winters are beyond challenging there. Not really, they are not that bad.

Healthcare would be one of the better paying fields in the area, far more summer tourist traffic with the Cities cottage/cabin coming Up North compared to the winter. Winter temperatures are not as bad due to less wind compared to the prairie/open areas off to the west. Snowfall is not very much as it isn't in the Snowbelt compared to the UP of Michigan, NW Wisconsin, etc. Yes, many nice lakes to fish in the area.

Brainerd/Baxter area is a good choice of a not over-sized yet area with just about everything one needs. It's a couple hours from the Cities. The area includes many lakes for fishing, plenty to do out-doors.

I'm typically there about once a month for shopping or just eating out when I'm up-north - it's just over an hour away from rural Sebeka where I have my get-away home.

Too many lakes to mention and the Mississippi River is in the neighborhood. There is a very nice zip line tour just north in Nisswa and they have skiing there too.

Brainerd is an odd mix of a poorer town surrounded by wealthier folks with cabins. Brainerd itself is one of the poorest cities in the state, but it does almost everything you need due to it being the starting point for the lakes area. It has a Costco, best buy, Kohl's, all the chain restaurants you need, but it is not Denver culturally.
