Where are places you go to watch these? Dark skies are the best. Clear. Should be almost no moon, or none at all, during the peak. Great to see the Milky Way at the same time. I always bring my camera, and a good tripod. Three fully charged batteries, dressed for the temps, and bug spray. Coffee. Water, and snacks, and arrive at one of my chosen spots, around 8 pm or so, usually leaving at around 3 am., for the drive home, I go anywhere from a few miles of Duluth, to up to 50 or more miles away. There are many places to go, so where might you go if you shoot on the Milky Way, or one of these upcoming Meteor Showers?

Do you photograph the Milky Way? It is absolutely amazing. The Milky Way can be peak times in July, and August. I have only done it now for this will be my third year photographing it. I get out as often as I can.

We hope to get out again this year. I have to drive about 50 miles to get into really dark skies. Even then it is not as dark as I would like. I drive out Highway 26 towards the Oregon coast and then take this little road that turns into a gravel road. Hardly any houses around. I love the peace and quiet. Right now the moon is waxing last night it was about half full so it's going to be quite a few days before viewing is good. Unless the moon sets. i have not looked at that.

I am a photographer but I have not really done the night sky. I miss having my telescope. I try to get there shortly before dark and bring snacks and water. I also through a sweatshirt or jacket in the car. it can cool off at night.

I imagine there are some good places in northern Minnesota.

Closest spot to be able to see Milky Way for anyone in Twin Cities is east of Hinkley around the border with WI. There and back late at night isn’t high on my priorities. It is fun to lay down at campsite in Beaver Bay and see it though!

We've found a decent spot not so far from home. Not as good as some places in the States and perhaps not of good photo-taking quality but I carry some of my best pictures in my head.

What are we viewing? Meteors from the constellation Perseus. He was a hero and god in Greek mythology who beheaded Medusa, the snake-haired monster who turned all who looked upon her into stone. Seems metaphorical to see those ”stones” flying through the night sky.

Later in history some folks came along and named the showers ”the tears of St. Lawrence” because they occur near the time of year of his martyrdom. They had problems with the science of the stars and Greek gods.

I have fond memories of when the kids were little, waking them in the wee hours, spraying them down with 'squito stuff and going out to lay on a blanket, watching for the ”falling stars” while we talked of ancient monsters and gods. We would have talked of St. Lawrence, too, if we hadn't been Minnesotan Lutherans and ignorant of the poor soul.

Other places and times other peoples must have done the same in other languages with other stories.

Now it's just the DH and me with early cups of coffee making the sounds our parents used to make when they first got out of bed. Tradition.

Great memories you are sharing. My daughter loves looking at the stars and I am hopeful we can go out at least one night to see them. Surprising that is one thing she will still enjoy doing with us old people as she call us.
