In the wake of a pandemic that has moved a significant amount of white-collar work online and made living in highly populated metro areas potentially less appealing to some, the idea of moving to a more rural area may begin to seem more attractive than it has in recent years. Coupled with the turmoil caused by the Minneapolis Police Department and the city's response to it, the idea could gain even more traction.

I'm from Greater Minnesota, and I know what it has to offer. Quieter living and close proximity to world-class outdoor activities. Cheaper cost of living. Communities that look out for one another. And so much more. For areas that actually do want to grow, this could be an opportunity like none other. If your community offers internet options that facilitate working from home, now is the time to advertise that. A lot of people might be thinking of leaving Minneapolis or one of its close suburbs, but they might not want to leave the state and all that it offers. The newly created opportunities to work from home open a world of possibility. Who knows - they might go for a drive through your town to check it out.

As a fellow native, I would encourage you to go against the ingrained culture just a little bit and be as outwardly welcoming as possible, to everyone you encounter who is from out of town. You never know - they could be looking for a new place to call home. Native Minnesotans don't wear their hearts on their sleeves, and usually keep to themselves, avoiding overt displays of any type of emotion or interest. But they do have big hearts, once you get to know them, and now is the time to show that.

After years of hearing about shrinking rural populations, Greater Minnesota has a rare chance to reverse the trend. Make good use of it.

Based on recent developments, add to this list individuals from the PNW who might enjoy some elements of a more liberal state, who prefer quieter and safe surroundings, and who are generally more interested in northern climes than the Sun Belt.

The potential market here grows day by day!
