You aren't a true Minnesotan until you've gotten your tongue stuck to a flagpole. In days past it was the yard water pump handle.

At least six young Minnesotans have completed their initiation requirement this week.

And they tell us movies have no effect on our behavior! (Reference "A Christmas Story" for further information.)

I think this is more art imitating life because kids were doing this long before 1983 when the Christmas story came out. I'm not quite fifty but in the later 70s, I did it a few times testing different metal surfaces testing the different weather conditions. Of course, I just used the tip of my tongue but it still had a "stick" factor. My classmates and friends also tried it at least once. All of this happened BEFORE the movie even came out.

I also think their are people out their telling us movies (video games) have a big effect on our behavior. I think both movies and video games have a minimal impact. This aligns with the extensive studies done on the subject matter.

I'm 49 y/o and did this when I was six years old. Got stuck good. Tore the hell out of my tongue. Later in life, you realize that if you had stayed calm & exhaled on your tongue, it would have unstuck painlessly.

True Minnesotans will occasionally wear shorts when it's below 32 degrees just to show you how tough they are. Also roll out trash bins in flip flops and t-shirts.

We did this when I was a kid too. My dad said his generation did it too. I remember one trick was to make a lot of warm saliva in your mouth. (I don't remember if you do that before sticking your tongue, or after to free it.)

I also remember people dressing lightly to prove they can handle the cold. In college, I remember the lawn in front of my dorm covered in kids in bathing suits laying on beach towels trying to get a tan --- in March, with piles of snow on the ground. I also remember going to concerts at Mirage and Ryan's in miniskirts. Once at Mirage some guys from California were asking us girls how we could be be dressed like that and not even shivering, when they were dressed warmly and freezing their butts off. We said it was because we were Minnesotans.

LOL obviously u never played a game of Call of Duty.

but yeah ur right, zero effects.....and neither does music, or social media or anything for that matter. we all make our own decisions completely uninfluenced by anything in our environment. brain washing doesnt exist, indoctrination is a lie, everything is of our own complete free volition with ZERO outside source being an initiating factor. studies prove this of course, extensively.
