Hello. There is a possible move in the near future for my wife and I (both in late 40’s, originally from small towns in Iowa, currently in big city, Fla). Wanting to move back close to our roots, and away from big city life. I’ve been to Rochester, but as a teenager, don’t remember much. Have a lot of family in NE Iowa, so familiar with the region. Given the choice to live anywhere from Owatonna to Rochester, potential job in Byron area, what would be your own choice and why? We are used to drives of 30-45 minutes to get basically anywhere, so if the amenities of Rochester are within that distance, wouldn’t be a big deal.

Have a look at Pine Island. It's nearly part of Rochester but has a nice, small town feel. The area around there is prettier, I think than the flatlands of Owatonna.

Kasson is good, homey people but I wonder if they aren't struggling. Their town roads are a mess. Pine Island is tidier, more upscale and has better resources.

Incidentally, if you visit Owatonna and are hungry stop in at Torey's for lunch. We recently celebrated a birthday dinner there and were very pleased with the quality, atmosphere and prices of the food. It's a hidden gem.

We are just checking out things from afar right now, won’t know for a couple weeks if this will materialize or not. I do think that we have pretty much devised on Kasson or Byron. That could change of course, but seems like the way we are leaning right now. Would still love to keep hearing any input y’all are willing to share. If it works out, I would guess we will be on our way up there in early July

It's not my area of expertise but a favorite restaurant is in nearby Mantorville so I do get over that way and I am friends with people from the area. I hope some others with more information will chime in.
