Hi there, my husband and I are considering a huge move from California to Hinckley. We fell in love with a 75 acre hobby farm. However, I'm questioning wether it's the right move for us. We're very outgoing, and love to have friends. My husband is a firearms instructor and I have been involved in charity work(cancer support-and neonatal care) we would love a small town feel, but also crave interaction within the community. Something like a Hallmark Christmas movie. I've been doing research on Red Wing...looks adorable.
As I said before, we are in love with the property we have made an offer on in Hinckley!!!
Help! We're Torn...

Hinckley is a very small town with not much to offer as far as conveniences...a casino, a couple of restaurants and gas stations. You'll have to go to Pine City, Sandstone, or further for groceries or healthcare. The area has a lot of woods and swamp.

There are outdoor activity opportunities. I grew up in Pine City; if I had to choose between Hinckley and Red Wing, I'd choose Red Wing. It's bigger, offers more conveniences, if you're into casinos, theres one near by. There's good river fishing opportunities. There is a lot of farms. Very scenic in the fall.

Used to go camping in the area. St Croix State Park. Went down St Croix river in a canoe and camped along the river. Beautiful area but probably not a lot to do. I would get involved with Civic groups to get to know your new town. If I remember correctly there is a Hinckley fire museum about the great fire in the late 1800/early 1900.

Redwing would be a larger town, different geography, but beautiful also, probably more so. But probably much more expensive. If your into guns I know the technical college offers a gun smithing course and students can sometimes work on your guns, I think.

Anyone considering a move to Red Wing should know that this will be one of your neighbors...

Yes, I don't know that Hinckley meets my definition as a nice, quaint small town. To me, it's more of an interstate town, a halfway stopping point for all the travelers going between the Twin Cities and the north shore. It also has a casino, which isn't something I'd want in my back yard personally.

Places like the below better fit the bill in my opinion:
Northfield
Redwing
Lake City
Wabasha
Cannon Falls
St. Peter

My parents live in Lake City for the summers and love it.

My grandparents spent their entire lives there. Its a wonderful place.

Anywhere along the river in s/e Minnesota is really a good choice.

Northfield is a good town but know the real estate there is 15%+ higher than other places. Property taxes are also 30-40% higher than anywhere else in Rice County. The trade off is that they have an excellent school system.

Cannon Falls is another good choice but Hgh 52 goes through there...another super busy highway.

Good luck with your choice original poster!
