We are moving from India to Minneapolis next month with our 2.5 year old son. My wife will be working in downtown.

Looking for recommendations for areas to live in. Doesn't matter if there is Indian community around but prefer drivable distance from downtown or light rail connectivity.

Me and my kid will be coming to US for first time.. So looking for all the help!!!

Thank You

Give us some information about how much you can afford, whether you will buy or rent, apartment or single family home, and desires amenties such as parks etc. Also, will you each have access to a car or will one or both of you be dependent on public transportation? We can give you better ideas if we know more about what you want. And welcome to Minnesota!

Thanks for the response! We definitely want to rent for sometime to get the feel of the city before buying. Haven’t thought much about the rent budget yet but guess 1500/1700 for 2 bedroom would be fine. Prefer good parks, day cares and activities for kids (have a 2.5 yr old) in vicinity. Having said that don’t mind spending a couple of hundreds more if the neighborhood is good.

And we both will have cars eventually.

I’m sorry but I don’t know much about the rental market. There are quite a few apartments in Richfield and Edina near Best Buy that might work. I think there is decent bus service to downtown from there. You might also look for a duplex in a two family building in southwest Minneapolis. East of Lake Harriet will be significantly cheaper than west if the lake.

There are some online rental search sites but I am not familiar with them. I wish I could be of more help.

My favorite rental website is padmapper. It pulls for a lot of different sites and puts the rentals on one map.

Hi Zuk,

I'd be happy to help, but I think your request might still be a bit broad. Can you answer the following questions, which will better help us guide you:

what is your crime tolerance?
do you like urban areas, or suburban
what activities are important to you
what is the maximum commute time you are willing to put up with
to what degree would you prefer public transportation over driving
You mentioned where your wife works, but will you be working outside the home
Anything other specifics that are must-haves? (quiet street, walkable, big yard, etc....)
