I'm looking at the possibility of commuting from Sioux Falls, SD to Marshall, MN. Any ideas about this drive in the winter? I'm guessing I90 should be fine, how's MN 23 from the SD/MN border up to Marshall? Thanks!

It totally depends on the winter. Last year and this year haven't been snowy. But when it's snowy and icy it would be miserable and sometimes completely impassible. Even I-90 gets shut down sometimes.

Also - it's a two hour drive one way! It's not like its mostly interstate. Sometimes there's backed up traffic on the two lane, and the road does a twisty turny in Pipestone. I'd never commute that far on a daily basis. What kind of life would you possibly have? You'd spend all your life in the car and would never have time for anything else. You'd never become a part of either community, so how could you ever enjoy anything?

Marshall is a perfectly nice, economically healthy place. But if you're so worried about living in a small town that you'd want to live so far away you should just try to find a different job IMHO.

I 90 in northwestern PA has been shut down off and on since right before Christmas having a heck of a snow storm there.

been keeping an eye on MN weather. Been a little cold but doesn't seem like there has been much snow so far.

Actually, from my house in Marshall, on the NE side of town, to my daughter's place in Sioux Falls, on the SW side of town, takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. But still, it's a long and boring drive and as mentioned, can be miserable in the winter, especially along the buffalo ridge where the wind really blows through. But in all the hundreds of times I've driven it, I have never come across backed up traffic.

Good to know it usually isn't that bad! I got stuck in a long line of cars behind a huge tractorish thing the last time I took 23 up to the Range. I can't remember where it was exactly, but know it was somewhere between Pipestone and Marshall. We were all driving about 5 miles an hour for what seemed like forever. It was in the mid morning hours in October.

How long ago was that? There have been quite a few passing lanes added between Pipestone and Marshall which can help during harvest season.

Just a few months ago! The line of cars was really long.
