Yes sure does depend on the winter Memorial Day 2014 temps in the almost 80F and huge ice chunks still floating on Lake Superior, anyone remember that time?

In the Duluth area, it happens VERY rapidly, like within a week from almost-bare trees to fully covered. I would say that the third week in May is the most common time for it to occur.

Speaking of blooming trees, how do cherry trees do in MN?

I'm planning on moving back there, and I'd love to bring along some cherry trees, especially the lovely double-petal variety and the cherry trees that look like pink weeping willows. I've never seen either in MN. Is it too cold for them? Or is it just that flowering trees simply aren't that popular in Minnesota?

What about wisteria and magnolia trees?

there are a few cherry (tart) trees that will perform well in the lower half of the state, North Star being the most prominent and easiest to find. I have one (Zone 3a/4b) that is about 20 years old and while damaged by splitting at some point, still provides a large crop of cherries each year that the birds manage to get to right before I get around to picking them. I'm about 50 miles north of DT Mpls.

I'm also growing plums and apricots and while beautifully flowering in the spring, other than a few small, but tasty plums, do not produce any fruit. When we lived in Bloomington we had more plums, cherries and pears than we could keep up with. Apples do extremely well for me and others up here.

Part of the problem lately has been the early spring kick-starts the flowering that generally occurs before May and leaves the budding fruit susceptible to freezing temps. I have crocus starting to pop up out of the ground and have rarely seen them come up this early.

The grass in Southern Minnesota is starting to turn green (some lawns already look like they could use a mow), so hopefully the trees won't be too far behind.

Grass still completely brown here in the Twin Cities. Are you in extreme Southern MN?

We received about 2.5'' of rain the last few days in WI. Grass is much greener now.

The last few days of warm temps have helped turn some grass in the Twin Cities green. A nice refreshing change from the dull brown that was everywhere. I can't wait to see the trees REALLY start to bud.

It won't be long! The extended forecast pretty much has 60s across the board (aside from a 70 here and there.. and a few 50s toward the end, but that's bearable)
