I would not say on an application that he was forced to resign. I would just say that he resigned. It's not untrue. If they ask why come up with something that is truthful but also sounds good. Most employers won't give the reason a former employee left if they are called for a reference.

I would definitely file for unemployment. You have nothing to lose by doing it and everything to gain. The fact that your husband did resign may hurt his chances of being approved for unemployment but you never know. The facts of the case may cause them to determine that he was in fact terminated to no fault of his own, which is what the requirements are to qualify for unemployment (unless it's a matter of constructive dismissal which it's not in your husband's case).
I was fired a few years ago and didn't think I'd qualify for unemployment and the employer did in fact fight it but I was approved. It never hurts to apply. And if he's denied it never hurts to appeal.
