Seeking advice - My husband and I are moving to Minneapolis in May 2012 due to higher paying jobs, from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along with us, we'll have our 2 dogs (Labs) a cat and 2 horses. We have no children and are in our late 30's. Any advice on affordable housing outside the metro to rent that has fenced yards, allowing 2 large dogs (one is 50lbs. the other is 80lbs.)? We found a place to board the horses in WI, close to the Mississippi River. So I'm hoping to find a house to rent equally close. I've read all the previous posts. MN sounds like a really great city, can't wait to get there. But finding a place with a yard and that allows dogs is difficult. Trying to stay around $1000-$1100 per month. I don't want to have to walk the dogs and pickup their poop every morning at 6am in the dead of winter, just want to open the back door and let them out....lol! Other dog-peeps can relate!

I would try craigslist. There are some out there. What area are you looking in?

I'd be surprised if you're looking for a single-family home and it doesn't allow animals. Could be wrong, but I'd imagine the suburbs would have quite a few options. Depending on where you're looking to live, there are likely a lot of places to look. Trying Craigslist is a great way to do that as it seems to be the way everyone lists stuff here in the Twin Cities.

Try Stillwater, White Bear, Woodbury, Roseville to be close to your horses. So many people are underwater on their homes, many are renting them out.

We are in your same situation. From what I can see most rentals do not accept large dogs. And oddly, I found more apartments would accept my large dogs than houses. Those that do accept large dogs tend to have breed restrictions and charge and additional $20-$50/month/pet with a two pet maximum. Those houses that do accept pets range from $1600 to over $2K. You can get some in N. Minneapolis, but don't think you want to live there. Also St. Paul looks pet friendly
