How is the area around Saint Tom's or Saint Catherine's? I am considering going there for graduate school but have never been up there. Is it in a more crime ridden area or fairly safe? Thanks!

These are excellent upper middle-class neighborhoods with homes in the $350,000 - 800,000 range. I think many who live there would say the biggest negative are rowdy St. Thomas student renters.

Both neighborhoods are considered some of the safest in St Paul. Like any city, there will be petty crime but if you exercise standard street smarts, you will be safe.

I would consider it safe. It mostly college students, new grads, and families. There are also some very nice homes. Use good judgment and be aware of your surroundings if you are out at night.

I would not go near the river in the evening/nighttime, however.

St Thomas & St Kate's are both in excellent neighborhoods & the students at the schools are generally fairy well-to-do. Honestly, the biggest dangers will be fights with DudeBros at house parties & bars, or getting run over by a car as you stumble home drunk from Tiff's/Plum's/Blue Door.

The rioting affected Saint Paul much less than Minneapolis and the St. Thomas area not at all. The Mississippi River served as a moat protecting the city. Saint Paul police actually barricaded the bridges from Mpls to SP to protect the city.

Crime is up in Saint Paul, like all cities since Covid and Trump, but the St. Thomas area is relatively unaffected. As another poster noted, the biggest problem would be rowdy St. Thomas students themselves.

The riots DID affect a small portion of this neighborhood, as a gas station was burned down, but that's it. Still the best in Saint Paul, by far, due to the stability and income the colleges and its central location provide.

Crocus Hill by a landslide is the best neighborhood in St Paul. It’s not cheap at all to own in and it’s hidden.
