I can't seem to find info about what proportion of Minneapolis' black population is an immigrant from Somali/Ethiopia or a child of one of those immigrants as opposed to being a descendant of black slaves in early America. Any guesses? observations? Do they make up the bulk of the black population now?

Also, anyone know what percentage of the city population is Muslim?

I'm not sure about that one...I'd have to ask some colleagues who actually study Minnesota demographic changes, and even changes within particular populations. But from what I remember, many people from East Africa began arriving in early 1996 - I don't recall who sponsored them, as I know you need a sponsor or immigrate to either the US or Canada. 1996 was a while ago, but not that long...I really don't think recent immigrants from Africa make up the black population. In certain parts of Minneapolis, maybe, but not the entire Twin Cities.

Census data from 2010 shows a total population in the Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, MN/ WI metro area of 3,279,833 people, of which 190,243 were identified as black.

http://diversitydata.sph.harvard.edu...w.aspx?loc=912

It is reported here that in 2009, there were 57,154 people living in this same metro area who were African immigrants. Not all were from East Africa, but that would be a significant portion of our African immigrant population.

Migration Information Source - African Immigrants in the United States

So that would indicate that something in the neighborhood of 1/4th to 1/3rd of our black population are African immigrants. That would seem about right. Africans are quite common in Minneapolis and really throughout the Twin Cities now.

The census bureau has the following estimates for Minneapolis (2006-2010 estimates)
black or African American alone:
total population: 69,160
foreign-born population: 17,143
born in Africa population: 15,906

So, that gives about 23% of the black population that was born in Africa. I would suppose there's a significant percentage that's also considered an east African immigrant, but not born in Africa.

For the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area you get the following numbers:

black or African American alone:
total population: 228,884
foreign-born population: 61,279
born in Africa population: 57,700

So, that gives about 25.2% of the black population that was born in Africa.

If you expand from black or African American alone to "or in combination with one or more other races" you get 20.8% for Minneapolis and 21.7% for the metro as a whole.

I think you misread the data. The 190,243 is Asian or Pacific Islander for the metro. Black population appears to be 240,388.

I would also guess there is a sizable population from Africa that are not from Somalia/Ehiopia and such. I'm not sure how to estimate that percentage though.

just curious, on a personal basis, what is the national/ethnic background of the black people you usally encounter in your own personal lives in the twin cities?

You're right, I read the wrong line. Thanks for catching that. And that would bring the percentage of blacks who are African immigrants closer to the 25% number cited above, so I think we are getting the idea that 25% is the answer to the OP's question.
