Duane Bobick, actually from a small town named Bowlus about 90 miles NW of Minneapolis. Bobick earned his hype back in the early 70's as an amateur fighter who beat the Cuban Teofilio Stevenson and Larry Holmes before eventually losing to Stevenson in the '72 Olympics. He beat a number of ranked heavyweights and won his first 38 fights, most by knock-out. He lost his first fight to Ken Norton in a Heavyweight Title Elimination bout and never really rose to that prominence again, eventually losing 3 more times to finish his career 48 - 4 (42 knockouts).

I don't think that it was Bobick. If I remember correctly it was a fighter from St.Paul.

This happened in 1915. The term " great white hope" referred generically to any white boxed who could beat the then champion, Jack Johnson, a black man. A play based Johnson's life was produced in 1967. it's no wonder nome of us remember.

Lots of Great White Hopes over the years but Bobick was the only one from Minnesota...

Tabbed as, "The Great White Hope" from the day he turned pro, Duane Bobick felt the weight of the world on his broad, muscular shoulders to bring home a world title.
