I'm in California and the crowding, traffic, sometimes inhospitable and almost always highly stressed people are starting to wear on me.

I am ready to move. I WAS ready to move quite some time ago. And it's about time I did.

One important factor is friendliness and neighborliness. Some people may not feel this is a priority, but it is for me.

I also like college towns a lot! Cities with a cosmopolitan feel, culturally and politically tolerant, yet with access to big city lifestyle if I so choose. Berkeley and Austin sound great.

Is Minneapolis a city where people smile, and help one another?

I ask because an acquaintance of mine said that Mn is SUPER duper friendly, and recommended I check it out sometime.

Minneapolis is as friendly as you make it. If you are outgoing, likable and friendly back, you will fit in just fine. If you sit back and whine about how much better things are where your used to live, people won't give you the time of day.

I don't know if I would consider Minneapolis "Super duper friendly" but there is a good share of friendly people here, along with some unfriendly ones. Overall people here are a little more reserved than in places like the east coast and southern California but if you can get people to warm up to you they are for the most part very nice.

Interesting. The acquaintance made Minneapolis out to be the friendliest place just about anywhere.

There have been plenty of debates about this. I'm not discrediting the friendliness of the people here, like I said there are plenty of friendly people here. However, our friendliness tends to get overblown (the "Minnesota nice" saying). Try going to any country in Latin America. The friendliness there blows Minnesota out of the water.

I would suggest you spend a winter here just to see if you have your priorities straight.
You might decide that California "sometimes inhospitable" might not be so bad after all.

Just like anyplace else, it's going to depend both on you and on the specific people you meet.

When I lived in the Twin Cities I thought it was cool to meet new people who had moved from other parts of the country, and most of my friends were also that way, but there are also people all wound up with their own families and friends and don't seem to care about meeting anyone new. Their loss, IMO...

The Twin Cities are great IMO. Both St. Paul and Minneapolis are fantastic cities and the class of the Midwest IMO. BTW I am from California as well, Raised there, but lived in St. Paul for a couple of summers with my dad as a kid. Absolutely loved it.
