Looking to spend a summer there while visiting family in the area. Heard summers are nice, looking to boondock, self-contained; somewhere without lots of mosquitoes, horseflies etc; near water ideally.

Near water without bugs? Doesn't exist.

If you picked the location carefully, you might avoid bugs. However, then you're looking at waterfront on Lake Michigan, very pricey and not boondocks. If you need boondocks, then scorpio516's response sums it up.

One summer I did about what you're wanting to do by camping at various state parks on Lake Michigan. It was certainly not boondocks, and today would likely run $35+ per night.
