  1. Detroit ($5,162)
  2. Philadelphia ($4,142)
  3. Newark, NJ ($3,482)
  4. Los Angeles ($3,325)
  5. New York City ($3,127)

  2. Wapakoneta, OH ($871)
  3. Chattanooga, TN ($911)
  4. Green Bay, WI ($948)
  5. Raleigh, NC ($949)
I was really surprised not to see Miami in the top 5. And poor Detroit, they really come out bad in a lot of these "US cities" studies.
Most Expensive Cities (2005) Cost per year in parentheses
  1. Detroit ($5,162) .........DEFINITE car theft risk
  2. Philadelphia ($4,142) .....car theft risk
  3. Newark, NJ ($3,482) ......car theft risk
  4. Los Angeles ($3,325) .....car theft risk
  5. New York City ($3,127)...Everything's expensive in NYC

Least Expensive Cities (2005)
  1. Roanoke, VA ($758) ......conservative suburb
  2. Wapakoneta, OH ($871) ...conservative suburb
  3. Chattanooga, TN ($911) ...bible belt special
  4. Green Bay, WI ($948) .....its too cold there to commit crimes or drive erratically in Green Bay
  5. Raleigh, NC ($949)....no rip offs there, but it will get more expensive as more miserable, liberal New Yorkers move their expensive, corrupt culture to the hills of Raleigh.

^^^ That's still high! My wife and I, when in NC, paid about $1200/yr for both of our cars. And they were pretty decent cars - a newer Accord and a new Maxima, and both of us were in our early 20's! And although we lived in a town smaller than Miami, it wasn't that small. About the size of Boynton or Deerfield. Certainly not as big as Miami or Jax, but it wasnt Mayberry either. That's sayin somethin!

I have a 2003 Corvette Z06 and an Acura TL and I think I pay around $1200 a year. I've only gotten one ticket in the last 11 years.

I think it is because you don't have an insurance history. I think once you've been with the company a year the prices will drop a lot.
$3,800. LOL. You can ensure an airplane for less than that.

we full cover insure four cars (the oldest being a 2005) for that same amount of money and we live in deepest, darkest and deadliest (the words of the bunny bunch on this board, not mine) miami gardens. you might want to shop that quotation around a bit.

33139 (South Beach) has among the highest car insurance rates in the country (according to a Geico guy a few years ago -- not that I'd seriously consider using them; I use Amica). He said it was probably because of all the uninsured drivers down here.

Insurance is compulsory, but a lot of people drop their insurance the month after they register their car. I assume the bad economy will only make things worse.

I'm anticipating my insurance rates tripling when I arrive. I'm guessing they'll be about par with CA rates (I'm hoping anyways)!

I'm not sure how your credit score affects your driving insurance. I've had the same credit score range since I started driving 8 years ago. Being able to steadily rent a car with out car insurance may rely on it but not the insurance rate for a owned vehicle.

It was based on my age and years of experience behind the wheel... i.e. number of tickets or accidents. My insurance started in NJ at 2500 every 6 months. Then it dropped by a hundred every year until I moved to PA 4 years ago. At that point it became 2500 for the year... now it's barely 1000 for the entire year and I've got full coverage as high as it goes. I do have to add that in NJ I used Statefarm, when I first moved to PA I had Allstate. Now I have progressive and they drop my insurance every 6 months plus if I pay it in one shot every 6 months they drop another 80 off the fee.

You need to find a good insurance provider. Shop around... some places advertise low but aren't as low as you think they'd be. I mean Statefarm and Allstate still quote me over 1000 while progressive gives me more coverage for 500 and are extremely responsive.

Forgot to mention I have a 2007 Camry XLE fully loaded.
