What are some of the best cultural events of the year? When are they?

Museum balls? Concerts? Opera in the Park or at the Beach? Miami food festival? Art Expos?

There was SO much to do this winter... big and small.
The highlights for me are/were:

Book Festival -- end of October
Art Basel -- November
Food & Wine -- Jan
Film Festival -- last week
Ultra Music Festival -- end of this month

Honestly, it's crazy how much there to do Oct-April.
In the summer almost nothing -- I know there is a small music thing at the Congregational Church in the summer.

Actually, I don't think it's crazy at all. From an event planning standpoint, it's the norm for south Florida. That time of year, generally, is "the season" - when snowbirds come down and the tourist season is at its peak.

Not to mention, that is Miami's best time of year weather-wise. I don't think anyone would want to do Food & Wine outside in the middle of August! Plus, the rest of the year is the rainy season/hurricane season in addition to the heat, so it is risky to plan large-scale outdoor events during hurricane season.

Other large festivals are of course the Coconut Grove Art Festival (February) and Beaux Arts (January).

These events sound really wonderful. Are they very expensive?

Do the museums and the Universities provide "indoor" community events during the summer when its really hot..."First Fridays/Saturdays", Classical music or dance or even Ethnic (Latin, Carribean, African, Cuban, Indian, Middle Eastern etc.) music and dance at the Universities?

Book Fair -- cheapish
Art Basel -- free-cheap-expensive-impossible all at once
Film Festival -- basically movie prices
Food/Wine -- EXPENSIVE (but includes food & drinks). Our one real splurge weekend this winter.
Coc Grove Art Fest -- cheapish ($7 I think)
Calle Ocho - free I think

There ARE some things in the summers, but as MiamiB pointed out, winter is when everyone wants to be here and it's safer weather-wise.

The Coral Gables Gallery Walk is the First Friday of every month, year round. You can walk or they have a trolley. It is free and a good time.

Also, there is a guy who has been holding weekly wine tastings every Friday night for the past 20 years in Coconut Grove. You pay about $10 and get to taste as many and as much of the featured wines as you like (usually 10-20 different wines each time). The location changes, but it is usually at one of the hotels in Coconut Grove, and you can find the information in the paper. He has now expanded to have tastings paired with food on other days of the week, as well as a beer tasting. These are smaller events, but they were always fun and we met some interesting people there.
