Hi-I am female mid 30's and would like to avoid any nasty cost of living suprise if I relocate. I have had clean driving record for the last 6 years. My husband (English) would need to re-liscense in the US as well. Any idea what are insurance costs would be?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I guess your best bet would be getting a quote from a few insurance companies

Absolutely, rates can vary significantly. I would add that, according to my (limited) understanding, rates will be significantly higher for a person without a US driver's license history and credit score. Some insurance companies will not even write a policy if even the spouse does not have a US history, but I am not sure if being UK helps.

PM me if you want a recommendation for a local insurance broker with its main offices in Coral Gables. You can do most of it by phone and/or email.

All the best!

hey alchem88....insurance rates in Miami are higher than other parts of the US. I have a clean driving record and am in my mid 30's and am paying about $950/6-months on a M3 convertible.

I would recommend progressive.com as the first place you check. I used to have Geico when i lived in CA, but in FL, their rates were double that of progressive.com.

Thanks CBC for that info. I am doing some cost of living comparisons before I commit myself to a new job (salary). I have burned been before by overlooking things like property taxes/maintenance fees and car insurance which can vary wildly. I am currently living in the UK so its hard to get a quote without a firm US address. I'll keep trying.

Miami-Dade County (doesn,'t matter what part of the county you live in its all the same) has the highest car insurance rates in the state. My sister and I pay around $2000 a year for car insurance.

When I moved to North Florida my car insurance rate dropped in half. When I moved back to Miami it doubled from North Florida, just an example.

My car insurance last I checked was 800 bi-annually in Illinois. In Miami they wanted 1800 bi-annually for the same car.

It must be those crazy drivers or all those loco car thieves down here.

It can't be the latter. My insurance nearly doubled moving from Orlando to South FL. The zip code I live in has literally 1/4th the auto theft rate as my old one and the county has literally half as Orange.
