I second not ruling out Brickell. I've lived in Brickell and the Roads (single family neighborhood just outside Brickell) for about 15 years. Since you haven't estabished where you are going to work the central location helps no matter where you end up working.

For example I've worked as far north as Aventura to as far south as Kendall and being in a central location as always limited my commute. You're pretty much always driving against the heavy traffic. Whereas if you live in Coconut Grove and get a job north of Downtown you're going to be sitting in traffic alot.

Yeah, the job situation is tricky. Very risky to move there without a job lined up. I'm not sure the best way to pull this off. Applying for jobs is tough in this economy.

When you say “utility/energy industry, what exactly do you mean? Line crew? Electrician? Designer/Engineer?

I would suggest renting first and learn the vibes of each neighborhood before you decide to buy something. As far as renting, I suggest Midtown or Edgewater. Walkable, close to everything and lots of singles. I rented in Midtown for 2 years before buying. The Grove is too many families. Although it is walkable and very clean, it feels like the suburbs to me. Brickell is a bit "clicky" and a little too chaotic for me.
