Today's NY Times has a superb set of graphics and explanation about the construction of the building; an amazing use of technology to simplify a complex set of issues. The article also includes some photos and videos of the location. Link to article.

Excerpt: "The New York Times created a 3-D model of the tower based on the original design drawings. That model, combined with a review of documents and interviews with structural experts, reveals how design errors, last-minute changes, dubious construction practices and years of worsening deterioration could have all contributed to the collapse."

NY Times is paywall site but does allow guests a limited number of views per month. IMO the NY Times is some of the best money I spend every month.

The defendants that will contribute to the $997 million settlement include Terra-tied entities and the rest of the development team for Eighty Seven Park, including general contractor John Moriarty & Associates of Florida; geotechnical engineer NV5; and structural engineer DeSimone Consulting Engineers. Other participants are Morabito Consultants, Champlain’s engineer for the building’s 40-year recertification; and Becker & Poliakoff, the condo association’s law firm. They were named in the lawsuit over the collapse.

Other settling parties that were not defendants in the suit include the town of Surfside, and Bizzi & Partners, a co-developer of Eighty Seven Park.

Default $997 million settlement for Surfside collapse

Yikes, I guess none of the parties wanted to roll the dice in a jury trial. They found some damning evidence.

The main lawsuit, filed on behalf of Champlain Towers South victims and family members, contends that work on the adjacent Eighty Seven Park tower damaged and destabilized the Champlain Towers building, which was in dire need of major structural repair. Champlain Towers was in the midst of its 40-year structural review when it partially crumbled to the ground

Quote:
Work on the Eighty Seven Park condo development project was temporarily halted one morning in March 2016 by the developer’s seismologist, who worried vibration levels from sheet pile driving were “too high” and could damage the neighboring structure, Champlain Towers South, newly filed court documents show. But within half an hour, at the instruction of site superintendent Frank Wiza, the crew resumed using heavy equipment to vibrate long sheets of steel deep into the earth less than 15 feet south of Champlain South’s underground structural perimeter wall. The reason Wiza gave for continuing the work? “F*** that wall,” he told the pile-driving crew, according to a handwritten work log from March 10, 2016. “We have money in the budget to replace it.”

I wonder how he feels now that he knows 98 people died. Does he feel bad, or does he really not care?

Yea, I couldn't buy here if I had the means to do so.
