Does it affect the way people view the Miami area? Yes. They get to see that Miami is the most scenic major metro area this side of San Diego.

Is the current crime rate less or greater?

This reminds me of the 'Miami Vice' show and the old Al Pacino 'Scarface' movie.. . I was asked constantly, does everyone do drugs, is there tons of crime??? It's like everyone was scared or something...
I do believe most people believe this sort of stuff but you know, maybe it's me but I don't see nor live any of this, sure there's some things that go on here & there..., but I think it's exagerrated a la Hollywood or better yet
"Fl-ollywood..." . I do agree it does show our beautiful scenic landscape & puts us more on the tourist map...and that's a good thing.

I depends where you dare to go. I have lived in Miami most of my life, but sheltered a bit in paradiso. However, I teach in the inner city. I have my stories and am not thrilled about alot of the changes, yet i do not see it as bad as it is portrayed. Yes, government corruption is alive and well. The Grove is still groovey the gables are cool, key biscayne beaches rock. South Beach? Did that same gig in Key West eons ago, and NOTHING will come close to that scene! However, in time I must go cause it is too costly to stay!

if you only watch csi miami youd actually make the mistake in thinking everyones white. in reality it is quite the opposite. 80-90% latin nearly everywhere. 2/3rds of jobs you need to know spanish (spanish is first here and english is a plus) including alot of mcdonalds.
most shows that show miami are actually showing you a barrier island known as miami beach connected to miami proper by bridges. its alot more like america on that island but it is a bubble of sanity in a sea of chaos.
