We once lived in Kings Contrivance and absolutely LOVED it - because the neighborhood was enclosed, close to shops and parks with walking paths, easy for children to play in the streets, diverse and friendly neighbors, decent schools. Am looking at houses in 400-600 range but because that neighborhood's small, am also hoping to know which other neighborhood pockets might offer similar amenities. Want to be in Howard County and preferably in Columbia, Clarksville or Ellicott City.

I would look at Hickory Ridge. It's located in Columbia right at the intersection between Columbia and Clarksville. Nice homes, nice neighborhood, nice village center; reminds me of King's Contrivance. Also the schools are probably the highest rated of the Columbia-proper schools. Atholton is always a high ranked high school.

I was going to say Hickory Ridge as well. After that, maybe River Hill (though it's higher income), then Dorsey's Search.
