9 am now, temperature now is 72 degrees. Temperatures expected to go to upper 80's today. Schools will be closing at noon today because of the heat.

Closing schools cuz the outdoor temperature is supposed to be in upper 80's?

Why don't they just close all the schools down there, this is ridiculous.

The kicker is that the school system got several million dollars (I forget how much) several years ago in a special appropriation from the Hogan Administration to install air conditioning in the schools without it. Apparently that never happened.

I looked but didn't link because it's a Sun paywall story from 2016. The original amount was $66 million and this year was another $50 million.

Five years after Gov. Larry Hogan ordered Baltimore City Schools to create a plan that would add air conditioning to its schools, 31 of the city’s schools were closed this week due to lack of air conditioning, drawing a heated exchange between the governor and school officials.

“It’s unbelievable to me that this is still happening after the Comptroller and I have worked together for the last six years to push to get every school air-conditioned, and to provide record funding for every school to be air-conditioned, and our nonstop efforts to hold schools accountable,” Hogan said in a statement.

Baltimore just can't get it right.

I'll love my hometown from a distance.

Corruption and crooked management from city and school officials. Thought a lot of money was supposed to be coming into the schools from the numerous casinos too.

Baltimore City does get an extra bit for having the casino located there but the overall casino money is "in place of" money and not "in addition to" money. There was no requirement that the money be put into extra programs or initiatives (like installing air conditioning), something that was glossed over when the legislation passed. As I mentioned earlier, the City schools have received extra money for AC the last several years.

In fact, Hogan had to get legislation passed so the Legislature would stop raiding the fund for other stuff. It passed but barely.
