When I lived in Maryland, I bought a used car from a Virginia dealer. They got me a temporary plates, but I have to get the car inspected in Maryland. Maryland inspection regulations are supposed to be tougher than Virginia's, so I had to get some things fixed.

I think the dealer charged me for the Maryland tax, but they were in Tysons Corner and regularly dealt with Maryland customers.

The MVA has something on their website for registering an out of state car. I know if there is a difference in the taxes charged in MD vs the taxes in VA, you'll have to pay the difference when you register your car. Call the VA dealership and ask them what is different on their end; I'm sure they deal with this frequently.

If it's a new car, some of the car companies have policies that discourage out of state purchases.

I purchased mine in VA and registered it in MD. I had to take it through MD inspection, which someone said its more stricter, which is true. I passed and had to pay nothing. VA temp tags are only 30 days, they are slow sending in paperwork, so they sent me another 30 day tag.

I had to pay taxes since VA didnt charge sales tax.. it wasnt bad for tax, tags and title.

Whenever I buy a used car I do a search of 150 miles to widen the net. Most every time it ends up an out of state purchase, I assume due to the lower cost of living. But it's always a gamble, as mentioned the inspection required in MD is much stricter than in neighboring states That's because it's not an annual thing it's a one time thing. I have not had one car that required more than a simply fix of a tail light lens or whatever but it's still a consideration.

I bought a car in NJ as a IL resident and paid IL taxes (in 2010). It's where ever you declare resistance I would suppose.
