So, I'm looking at buying a house near Monterey Ave. in Odenton- Since I'm being stationed in the area.

I keep hearing most Odenton isn't that bad, but then from people also stationed there I'm hearing it tends to be "ghetto" the farther you get from Piney Orchards.

Then on top of that when I look at crime rates it looks like someone or some business is either robbed or attacked every other month.

So, honestly, in just that area by Monterey Ave is it safe? Can you go for a jog and not get attacked? Should you worry about your house getting broken into? Safe for kids?

If your being stationed at Fort Meade or associated facilities in the area those people would be the BEST source for big picture info of the area! Talk to them BEFORE you buy!

My wife lived on Monterey Ave. until about 10 years ago. No problems with safety. I think it's still OK there.

I don't know which neighborhood that would be in, but the Chapelgate area has really gotten sketchy and so has the 7 oaks area.

Listen to PylesFord. Call or contact the base housing office and see if they can offer recommendations.

Have you been to visit the area first? If schools are important to you, check out Greatschools.org to see the ratings/reviews/other pertinent information about the neighborhood schools. That might tell you all you need to know about the neighborhood. But in general, I'd recommend not buying until you get a feel for the area; what someone else deems safe may not be safe in your eyes. We pcs'd here last year and I'm happy to help in any way; just send me a message and I'll get you whatever information you need.

Odenton is not bad, Seven Oaks is NOT as bad as people are saying. Most of the problems are in the Apartments and not in the Townhouses/ Single Family homes. Look into Laurel as well. Russett is pretty safe and has no problems plus you have more amenities than in Odenton.

I was thinking about moving to Odenton. Which apartments are you referring to that have problems?

Odenton is not bad at all. I live near Odenton in Arnold, and we have a neighborhood called "Cape St. Claire" that people say the same things about. It is all just rumors. I believe the high school Odenton feeds into (Arundel High School) is one of Anne Arundel County's best high schools if schools are something you're concerned about. My husband is very picky about school districts and Arundel was one of the few school districts he liked in Anne Arundel County. Seven Oaks is not bad either. One of my new colleges lives there, and she loves it. I think all area's in Anne Arundel County are fine. All the schools are nothing below average. And all area's have nice and hard working people .
