"I remember back in the 70’s the bumper stickers, “welcome to Maine, now go home”

Hey, they stole that from Oregon! In a way the two places are similar. I could never get people I met in Belfast to get beyond the Yep and Nope stage in a "conversation". In Portland, they might sorta, kinda acknowledge your presence, but it was in a totally Retail Sales manner. After the first few sentences they were done w/ you and that was that.

So I moved back Down South, and everyone speaks to everyone! Even if they don't particularly like you, which is almost impossible to tell because they're still well mannered and talkative. In over a year here only one person has been a problem, and they were just pretty nuts to everyone. In Tucson it was every other day that someone was rude. For 2 years I would wave and/or say hi to folks as I walked through my neighborhood, may as well have been the invisible man.

I have had family members who had much the same reaction you did. Maybe as an Introvert, I just prefer the Maine way. But in my experience, Mainers are not standoffish or unfriendly at all, but they do have to warm up to you before they open up to you. You can't go up to a perfect stranger in a grocery store and strike up a conversation about intimate details of their personal life. And you can very much do that where I grew up in the Southwest. And I hated it.

I love NE, Maine is right there be it on the Coast or In land Baxter State Park. My problem is the grand kids and the Mrs being too far away from them.

Massachusetts is still #1. I can't figure out how to load a .jpg right now for the graphic.

Fact 1: In 2023, most buyers who purchased Single Family homes came from within the State of
Maine (67.87%).

Fact 2: The majority of Maine’s out-of-state buyers came from Massachusetts (8.11%), followed
by New Hampshire (4.09%), Florida (2.56%), and New York(1.94%).

Based on information from Maine Real Estate Information System, Inc. (d/b/a Maine Listings). Information was pulled on
January 5, 2024 for the period of January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023.
