Food served in prisons and jails is notoriously dreadful.  Picture mystery meat drenched with dull gravy and a heavy reliance on overly processed starch.

Studies show that prison diets are often lacking in nutrition, low in fruits and vegetables and high in salt, sugar, and saturated fat.

Agreed - it shouldn't cost a lot, should improve the terrible food, and, give some of the inmates something productive to do, teach them some skills which could be useful when released. All good.

our old community back in Connecticut had a full-fledged prison farm: Cows, vegetables, tractors, etc, were all part of the learning curve that the prisoners were given the opportunity to experience. That was until some "do-gooders" shut it all down because they felt they were taking advantage of the prisoners. Ugh.

Maine also has a 100% excellent woodworking shop that sells their goods in Thomaston that I can recommend to anyone looking for outstanding quality furniture pieces at about 1/2 the commercial prices being charged by private companies. We've spent more than our share at that great store and visit it regularly. Maine should be proud!

Yes, I went to that store over the summer and was very surprised at all the different items that prisoners had made! I went home with a beautiful bookcase for my son's bedroom.
