I like the mix of housing in Old Orchard Beach -- condos, townhouses and single family homes. I'm just wondering if the town becomes partying central for teens and 20-somethings during the summer and peaceful evenings disappear. I've been there in the shoulder seasons but not during July and August and I'm wondering if OOB becomes a northern version of (ugh) Jersey Shore.

What an odd question. People are allowed to have fun and enjoy summer.

My only exposure to OOB was cruising the strip there one summer afternoon, but as it happened, there was a nasty fistfight going on on the sidewalk in front of us, and the police nearby that seemed in no hurry to intervene - they just looked bored... so that little exposure looked rowdy, yes.

I like the vibe and will visit in August. I like the variety of eateries and the fact there is a nice business district in addition to the amusements. Plus it's only 4-5 hours south to where my relatives live in the northeast. I need a town that doesn't close down in the winter since I will be there aside from some trips to my Carolina condo.

Yes, but many come to Maine for quiet and civility. Where I am I hope the punks never venture towards. I doubt they ever would

OOB certainly isn't the Jersey Shore, but it certainly is NOT quiet. If you want quiet beaches you're going to have to go farther north.

Popham Beach, even when it is really crowded, is seldom rowdy.

Just do a search.
Not as bad as it was in the 70's but...

I live here in OOB. My general rule is to basically stay at home for most of the season, other than going to work. I don't know that it's terribly rowdy, but it's too crowded for me. I live on a quiet little dead end street about a 10 minute walk to the beach, so am not too affected by it. We wanted to go out for a late breakfast last week, but there were long lines everywhere. I know it's good for the businesses around here, so we will happily put up with it.
This is actually a good town, with some very good people in it who care about others and especially animals. It's great that people like to visit, but hopefully they will be respectful of our town...and please don't trash the beach.
