My wife and I will be retiring to Maine in 2020 from New Jersey. We've been all over coastal Maine over the years and love, love, love Eastport but it is just too far north for our needs. So we're looking for an Eastport-like town located about 2 driving hours south of Eastport. By this I mean a town on the ocean, with a small walkable downtown with restaurants and a grocery store or two within a short drive. Looking for that small town feel with some amenities. Any suggestions are appreciated. I'll add that we pay $10,000 a year in property taxes (NJ is highest in the nation for property taxes) so I don't think Maine's tax rates for oceanview properties will shock me. Thanks.

What have your experiences been on MDI, Blue Hill, and Deer Isle?

Look at Belfast. It doesn't close up in the winter, unlike Eastport.

Yeah. A good chunk of my family was from Sandy Point. Sea Captains and all that. Belfast has transformed over the last 30 years.

Our place in Sandy Point (Stockton Springs) was sold back in the '90's when Pa decided that over $3,000.00 a year for a 90 year old 2 x 3 frame camp just wasn't worth it. Same with my grandparent's home there. I can't figure out why Stockton Springs has gone so heavy on property taxes.

Not quite reasonable for the families that owned all that waterfront for generations and now can't afford it. $4000/yr. is $333.33 a month. Kinda rough on some, which is why its all been sold out over the decades and the municipalities tend to walk it to the non-residents. My lot down to Deer Isle is taxed at less than $200/yr. Near a public beach. With a view of Penobscot Bay.

Going to send you a PM. We are moving from NJ - hopefully 2018, my house is for sale (in Salem County). We are mostly looking in Washington County, but also in coastal towns a bit South of that. Probably smaller towns that you are interested in. Good luck, Jill
