CEO George McCanless says they're applying for the Promise Neighborhood grant. Its a federal education grant worth about $30 million.
"It's trying to address all of those things where the children would then be a lot more focused on their education," McCanless said.
He says they would provide more support services like additional counselors, nurses, and parent educators.
"They are getting ready to build a new middle school, high school complex, if we could add this, too, it would be a real shot of energy to that side of town, where in some cases, there hasn't been a lot of investment," McCanless said.
Finney thinks that investment is long overdue.
"It could help along the household needs and establish what they need there, help the parents, motivate them and what can be done to help their children," Finney said. "Sure, it could go a long way."
The US Department of Education could decide on the grant this fall, and some services could be added as early as January.
