Lake Charles is a good city for gamblers and golfers. It's a slow growing city. It's kind of in it's transition stage. Has more character and potential than [almost] any city its size, and has more than enough space for development(including land that could be retained for rural living). Rita kind of took away the little bit we had left downtown(lost harrahs, but atleast isle of capri is still across the bridge). But it's slowly picking back up. I would not swim in the lake of Lake Charles, though I would to some extent trust prien lake and the calcasieu river. Lakes here are for boating, we swim in swimming pools .

Speaking of casinos, since sugarcane bay has been cancelled, I hear there is another company interested in building adjacent to lauberge where the cancelled project was supposed to be.

You've got to be careful about people giving out deceptive information in these forums. I think sometimes people let their own hometown biases cloud their versions of reality.
Please give some precise, informative information, because I am considering relocating to Lake Charles

I've noticed here at city-data that if someone posts on an old thread that's been inactive for a while, someone points out that it's an old thread. But if they start a new thread on a topic that already exists from the past, they get scolded for creating another thread on a previous topic.

Just sayin'.......

LC is a nice town, I would consider it somewhat small. I lived in DeRidder, which is about an hour north on 171. You have pretty much everything you would need there in LC, Houston is 2 hours west and Baton Rouge is 2 hours east if you need anything else. I enjoyed visiting LC, I found it much nicer than DeRidder but DeRidder is definitely small town.

LC has an airport but flights connect to Houston or Dallas when you fly most places.

Of course there were places that didn't seem to nice in LC but that's in every city.

Bottom line: if I had to live in Louisiana, I would live in LC.

I know this is an old thread, but I just have to say... I would NOT recommend moving to Lake Charles. Unless you are a compulsive gambler, or make tons of money working at the plants, you will not be happy here. There is alot of development starting up, but the people here just ruin everything. Someone posted already that they are uneducated, they are also close minded, snobby, and definitely do not represent "southern hospitality". Its very hard to make friends unless you want to party and get plastered every weekend. The city drags its feet and forces ridiculous red tape on any business that tries to come here. Sugarcane Bay failed, the boardwalk/downtown area has been in the process of a renovation for the past 10 years and we can't get anything off the ground. A new chain restaurant just opened on Nelson road and one of the managers said they had total hell trying to open the business in Lake Charles. We also have the 7th most dangerous bridge in the world, and nothing is being done to repair/replace it... the list goes on. Not to mention the school system is just HORRENDOUS. I know, I worked in it.
For good healthcare, you'll have to drive to Houston. Granted, there are a few good doctors but I have heard/experienced horror stories about the majority of medical providers here.
As far as crime, all cities have crime, but Lake Charles is prone to it because it sits right on the I-10 and is halfway between Baton Rouge/New Orleans and Houston. It brings alot of drug activity into the area.
There are also no jobs, again.. unless you want to work at the casino or the plants. Hard to find a job in the first place, and when you do find one, the pay is likely going to be half of what you would make in other cities.

I was born and raised here, and I can't wait to get out. There are so many other cities for you to experience life in! Don't waste it in Lake Charles.

You must be spying on me lol. I have been saying the same thing. Though I had no idea about the trouble of getting the chair restaurant open.
