Has anyone received a letter from the State of Louisiana Office of Debt Recovery stating that they owe them money for vehicle registration or lack of Louisiana auto insurance for a vehicle that you haven't owned in years? We haven't lived in Louisiana since 2005 and haven't had a motor vehicle registered or titled in Louisiana since we left the state. Regardless, I received a rather threatening letter at my home stating that I owed the Louisiana Office of Debt Recovery over $523. They didn't state the reason for this in the initial letter. When I responded they stated that they went back in their OMV records and that the insurance lapsed on the vehicle in question in December 2005. That's because a new policy was issued in Michigan where we had just moved to. After nearly 17 years they informed me this morning that they want "proof of insurance" for the vehicle or a copy of the bill of sale. I traded the vehicle in question in at a Michigan car dealership in 2009. They're threatening to send this to collections or even garnish wages or my bank account if I don't provide this documentation and pay the $523.00 I allegedly owe them. I doubt that the State of Louisiana has any enforcement authority outside of the state. However, I'd be furious if they flagged my credit report for this bogus debt. The statue of limitations of debts in Louisiana is ten years. I cannot believe the state is pursing this issue after nearly 17 years.

Yes! I just got one for nearly $1300...moved out of Louisiana in 2011! Needless to say I was freaked out...I was young and didn't keep records of anything...and I'm confident I don't actually owe anything! I transferred my plates and license and everything promptly upon moving. What did you end up doing?!
