Just like how a SMALL number of people from Appalachia are offended to be called hillbillies and most of them embrace that term. More like that than like the N word or something.

There was a small number of Cajuns who were offended by coonass. But no, the vast majority of Cajuns I know embrace it though today it means more of a rednecky Cajun, for example someone who lives in suburban Baton Rouge and drives an SUV may have Cajun ancestry but wouldn't be considered a coonass while someone living by the swamps and living a very outdoorsy lifestyle may.

I've heard Houma and Breaux Bridge described as particularly coonass areas.
