I moved back here to house hunt from Dallas, Texas. I have Honda Fit 2011. Paid $900/yr in Dallas. Retired, 3,000 miles a year or thereabouts, no accidents or speeding tickets.

Getting quotes here in Lake Charles has been a stressful experience! Does EVERYONE pay these rates in Louisiana? I got a quote for $1,374 from Allstate, $1,500 from Liberty Mutal. WTH? I got a Progressive policy for $900/yr, so went with that. This is full coverage 50/100, standard deductibles.

BUT the catch-22 is when I get homeowner's insurance here (rates are through the roof because this is a natural disaster area), you have to pay much higher rates unless you have your car insurance with them. Progressive does not sell HO insurance here, because it's zoned a natural disaster area.

Does EVERYONE pay these sorts of rates for car insurance? (My dad pays high rates because he and wife have had some fender benders; my brother says he pays about $900/yr....but I suspect he might be fibbing; he often likes to make things sound better than they are, so it's hard to know).

We pay the highest in the nation, so unfortunately yes.

Thanks! I got Progressive, too. Normal rates.

However, to get homeowner's insurance, Allstate requires you get auto with them, and they are almost double the rates of Progressive. Others will sell you HO ins. as a standalone, but if you don't also give them your auto, their HO rates are sky high. Like almost $2,800 for a 2000 sf brick house built after 2000. Outrageous.

The only other option is to go with a lesser ins. co. for HO and keep Progressive auto. Progressive doesn't sell HO ins. here.

This is very upsetting. Makes me want to settle down somewhere else. But this is a high claims area, so it is what it is.
