National grid called my house and said they want to access my basement meter for some work. Did anyone else get a similar call? They said it is required that they do this work by law!

They just did my whole street. They installed new pipes outside, new pipes inside and installed new outdoor meters for most people on the street (I kept mine inside because it would've been a total eyesore where they wanted to put it).

They most likely need to swap out the meter....no big deal.

Funny.. I called National Grid and the customer service agent was not aware of my appointment. I am wondering if this is new scam to rob people.

My exterior meter became an interior meter when I built my extension. Nat Grid charged me close to $1,100 to come in and move the meter outside. Bassterds!

Had this done last year. They have the right to access your meter once a year when it's inside. In my case, they were doing maintenance in the street, needed to get to the meter but offered to put the meter outside at no charge. I jumped at the chance and the location it's in is not too objectionable. Otherwise it would have cost $$$
LIPA and National Grid often outsource to Asplundh - you can see their trucks all over Long Island (they also do a lot of tree trimming). You may have gotten the call from Asplundh; once they make the appointment, National Grid will definitely have it on their schedule.

Yes. I did see Asplundh in the callerID. I guess they might be legitimate then.

Well they may be. They came to do my parents a few years ago. No call, no nothing. Guy drove a van with Asplundh on it and he was very nasty and forceful. He wanted to do the job right then and there. My parents told him they would not grant him access as they had no prior appointment made and would have to call to find out. He started yelling at us. He's standing 2 feet away from me and I'm yelling at him to get off the property. When he saw I wouldn't back down and kept telling him to get his butt out of here, he finally left.

After my parents called, they did find out that Asplundh was the company contracted to do the work and my parents made an appointment. Some other guy came and he was nicer.

If you have NO appointment or NO awareness about it, do NOT let them in. Find out first if you're scheduled. Your safety is more important.

It was Asplundh who called me too and did the work.
