Just out of curiosity, Scotcha, what is your recommendation based on? Is he your doctor, your boss, your dad, your uncle, your friend, etc? lol... Just wondering if your endorsement is genuine!!

At Advanced Dermatology in Roslyn, also have offices in Queens & NYC, they have a black dermatologist. There are a number of different doctors in this office and I have been going there for over 15 years. Great group of doctors!

Default Thanks for Info

Dr. Daley actually left the practice and is moving to another state. A friend of mine had recommmended me to her prior to me posting a message.

As to everyone else debating why I requested a black doctor, there are some issues regarding the skin that may only pertain to a certain ethnic group. Just like there are some diseases that are more prevalent in some cultures than others.

I actually found a Dr. Jacqueline Fern in Commack who specializes in "skin of color". I have no idea what race she is but it is her speciality that is most important to me.

Hi, if that doctor doesn't work out, I'd recommend Dr. Diane Maiwald or Dr. Roger Koreen in Huntington. Although they are not African-American, both are very good and have helped me and a friend of mine with our skin.

P.S. If you do find a good dermatologist who is African-American on Long Island (Suffolk County), please post it however. A friend of mine is having keloid issues, and she is tired of trekking into the city for her doctor's appointments.

I am a Dermatologist x 25 years. The question put is quite appropriate however I'm guessing she meant a Derm that specializes or is knowledgeable in the treatment of "skin of color". A few comments are in order: not all black derms are good at treating black skin or any skin for that matter; same goes for white and female derms; there are good docs and bad docs. Skin of color (skin type 5-6) whether it be african-american, asian, indian, some italians, is much trickier to treat for several reasons: 1)there are problems inherent to blacks that whites do not get like pseudofolliculitis barbae, 2)various types of scalp conditions and hair loss, and 3) the development of keloids and hyper/hypopigmentation of the skin after acne, mole removals, and basically any type of injury to the skin. If a Derm trained in an all-white environment then he/she is probably not too experienced or interested in treating black skin disorders (I apologize to the docs who are). If, like me, training was in an entirely black inner-city area then you can be sure I am sensitive to and knowledgeable about black skin disorders. The advice given to you regarding ingrown hairs was not good advice. You should have been told about shaving first thing. Followed by treatment with antibiotics, both topical and systemic, and a mild steroid cream to sooth the skin. Laser hair removal is also an option. If the hairs aren't there, they can't get ingrown. Sorry for the long post, but the question is legitimate for the above reasons, just, I think, misstated and misunderstood. PS Dr Trish Daly moved I hear. Good luck.

Default Far away

Unfortunately, I am in South Jersey but am in the processing of evaluating a position in a large group in LI and with an office in Manhattan...that's how I came to be on this thread. I should know for sure within a week if I'm going to make the move. Do you have a particular issue which needs to be addressed?

Dr. Alexandria Booth - she is in Dr. Demento's group in Garden City. They are too far from me to go to regularly, but I saw her once and she was very professional and helped me.

Frank J. DeMento MD Garden City Dermatologist
