The fact is, whether you like it or not, LI does have something very special with its schools. There was an article in the NY Times a couple of months ago saying that because of LI, and some other NY metro areas they have changed their admissions process, to the detriment of these areas, actually. Places like Duke and Michigan now look to have regional diversity b/c there were "too many" kids from these schools. Well rounded, great grades, SATs, AP courses, etc. That means something...it means the schools and the kids are top notch. The Intel finals is just one more example of that.

B/c you are bitter about taxes, etc. and don't/can't afford it, doesn't mean it not worth it too many. There's good reason for it.

So true. If you leave the island, Westchester, Jersey, or Boston area, you will have to work much harder to get the educational opportunities that can be found in the better LI districts & in many cases you won't find it at all.
But, if you are in a mediocre or bad LI district why bother staying & paying those taxes? Jus tbecasue the kids 5 miles away have tose resources means nothing for the kid from Brentwood, for example.

I would say this is also true. Note sure how the lesser LI districts stack up. Of course, in the lesser districts the houses and taxes are much lower. Of course, to people making less income it's probably relatively the same.
